What to Expect in Your First Session
You don't have to have it figured out before you show up. That's what the first session is for.
Reaching out is often the hardest part.
If you're not sure what actually happens once you do, you're on the right page.
-
Before you book anything: we start with a free 15-minute phone consultation. No payment, no commitment, just a chance to talk through what's going on for you and see if it feels like a good fit. Some people know within five minutes. Others need to sit with it. Either is fine.
-
Your first full session isn't an interrogation. I'll ask about what's bringing you in, but there's no pressure to have a tidy explanation. A lot of people arrive knowing something feels off without being able to clearly explain why, and that's a completely normal place to start from.
-
What we won't do is dive straight into your hardest memory or push you to feel something before you're ready. Trust and pacing matter more to me than moving fast.
-
After that first session, we'll talk about what a realistic path forward looks like. We'll discuss session frequency, what we'd focus on, and what change might actually look like for you specifically.
Common questions before booking.
Do I need to know what's "wrong" with me first?
No, you absolutely do not. Plenty of people come in with a vague sense that something's off. That's exactly what we can work out together.
What if I get emotional, or I don't?
Both are fine, as there's no perfect way to show up to a first session.
Is this covered by insurance?
Sessions are typically covered under most extended health plans that include Registered Psychotherapist services although, it's worth double-checking your specific agreement.
What if I'm not ready to book a full session yet?
That's what the free 15-minute consultation is for. It's genuinely a short, low-stakes conversation, not a commitment.
