Frequently Asked Questions
It's natural to have questions before starting therapy. I hope that this page can help answer most of them.
Feel free to reach out via email or phone in case you have others.
Yes. I see clients in-person at my Kingston office and virtually anywhere in Ontario, so you can work with me no matter where you're based in the province.
It really depends on what you're working through, but most clients start to notice meaningful shifts somewhere between 6 and 12 sessions. We'll check in around the six-week mark to see how things are going and adjust from there.
I don't bill insurance companies directly, but I provide a receipt after every session that most insurance providers accept for Registered Psychotherapist services. It's worth checking with your provider ahead of time to confirm your coverage.
Yes. I'm a queer therapist and I'm listed with the Rainbow Health Ontario directory. You shouldn't have to wonder whether your therapist gets it, so I try to make that clear from the start.
Your first session is a chance to explain what brings you to therapy. Almost everybody gets nervous before their first session, so I'll do my best to support you by asking questions and offering patience when the right words are hard to come by. We'll also review important practice policies about billing, attendance, confidentiality, and informed consent.
Individual sessions last 60 minutes whereas couple's sessions last 60-90 minutes, depending on our pace.
The easiest way to reschedule or cancel an appointment is to log into your Jane account (you can do that here!) and select "Upcoming Appointments". To reschedule or cancel, simply select the downward arrow beside the relevant appointment. If you're seeing "Contact to cancel", it is now less than 24 hours before your session and cancelling or no-showing will result in a charge to your account equal to the session fee. If you need to reschedule or cancel at that point in time, an email or call is much appreciated.
Psychotherapy is a conversation-based process that helps you understand your thoughts, emotions, and the patterns running underneath them. You don't have to be in crisis to benefit. Many of my clients are self-aware and successful on the outside, but quietly exhausted underneath. If that sounds familiar, therapy is likely a good fit.
My work is trauma-informed and attachment-based, drawing on Emotionally Focused Therapy, narrative therapy, and parts work, all grounded in a humanistic, person-centred lens. You can read more about how this shows up in session on my My Approach page.
I most often work with anxiety, burnout, trauma, low self-esteem, people-pleasing, difficult relationships with parents, and ADHD-affirming therapy, along with couples working through recurring conflict or disconnection.
Individual sessions are 60 minutes and cost $170, GST/HST exempt. Couples sessions are $185 for 60 minutes or $255 for 90 minutes, also GST/HST exempt. During couples work, I typically also see each partner individually once after the first session, billed at $170. The free consultation call is exactly that: free, with no obligation to book anything further. You can see full details, and book directly, on my Fees page.
What you share in session is confidential, with a few legally required exceptions, most commonly if there's a risk of serious harm to yourself or someone else, or suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable person. We'll go over this fully during your first session. As a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), I follow the ethics code and practice standards set forth by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).
